THE 25TH OF APRIL IN SHORTS, PART 2
Fr, 24 January 2025, 19h00 (Doors 18h00), Filmklubb Offenbach
Short films, Portugal 1993-2022, English subtitles, 70′
After our opening event, the Short Film Summer Night in August 2024, we will be showing the second part of the curated short film programme at the festival, with five more films that approach the Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974 in Portugal and the time of the dictatorship from different perspectives. We will show this selection of experimental, animated, documentary or fictional short films on Friday 24 January 2025, at the Filmklubb Offenbach in two blocks with a short break.
We are delighted to have Manuel Campos as our ‘film companion’ for this screening. Campos has a fascinating biography: trade unionist in Frankfurt, city councillor in Mörfelden-Walldorf, moderator at ‘Nachbarn in Europa’ (Neighbours in Europe), social attaché in Brasilia. He also sings fados and plays the guitar. He will perform a few thematically appropriate songs after the film programme.

In the short film ‘Os Salteadores’, a conversation about the identity of a group murdered during the Spanish Civil War reveals the ideological state of mind of the Salazar regime. The animated film »O Casaco Rosa« is a meta-narrative about PIDE officer Rosa Casaco, who orchestrated the assassination of opposition presidential candidate General Humberto Delgado. »25 de Abril – Uma Aventura Para a Democracia« is a film about the Carnation Revolution that focuses on the support from the population.
- »Porto, 1975«, Filipa César, 2010, 10’
- »Metáfora ou a Tristeza Virada do Avesso« (Metaphor or Sadness Inside Out), Catarina Vasconcelos, 2013, 30’

‘Porto, 1975’ takes us to a residential complex whose construction began in 1975 and was only completed in 2006, and tells of the turbulent post-revolutionary period in Portugal that accompanied its construction. In “Metáfora ou a Tristeza Virada do Avesso”, an exchange of letters between siblings takes us back to the 1970s, when their mother was still alive.
The films will be shown in the original Portuguese version with English subtitles.
