The LusOFest is a regional festival for Portuguese-language film in Offenbach am Main. Every year, it shows a small selection of feature-length and short films and documentaries from the Portuguese-speaking world, the so-called Lusophonie.

The Portuguese-speaking countries have produced a diverse, interesting film landscape with its own visual language and themes. However, this is not very present in the Rhine-Main region. The nearest festival for Portuguese-language film takes place once a year in Berlin.

The films are predominantly from Portuguese-speaking countries…
The common framework for international contributions is the Portuguese language*. The films are always shown in OV with subtitles (de or en) and usually come from: Angola, Brazil, Portugal, Cap Verde and Mozambique. The short film competition also features German-language films from the Rhine-Main region.

The feature-length film program consists mainly of Portuguese-language films. Occasionally, however, we also show German-language feature-length films that have a connection to a Portuguese-speaking country. In the short film competition, German-language films from the Rhine-Main region are shown together with Portuguese-language films.

Each festival edition will have a theme or a country focus. The first edition in 2025 is entitled “Once upon a time there was a revolution” and highlights the 1974 Carnation Revolution in Portugal and the independence of Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa. In subsequent years, various focuses on different countries and regions are planned.

The LusOFest organizes a short film competition for Portuguese-language films as well as for films related to Offenbach or the region and offers young filmmakers a platform. A jury prize and an audience prize are awarded and participation is free of charge. Submissions were possible via FilmFreeway and Festhome. We particularly encouraged students to submit entries.

The first edition of LusOFest will take place from January 23 to 26, 2025. In the coming years, the festival is also planned around the last weekend in January. The events will take place during the week in the evening or at the weekend. There will be no time overlaps between different performances or events

The festival center of LusOFest is located in the Filmklubb Offenbach at Isenburgring 36, a place with a Mediterranean flair that has been part of the festival concept from the very beginning. Film clubs have played an important role in many Portuguese-speaking countries in familiarizing cineastes with international film trends. Directions are available on this website. In addition, short films will be shown at 57Nord with free admission.

If that’s not enough for you, you can support us financially with donations. The institutional sponsor of LusOFest is the supporting association of the Waggon am Kulturgleis, Soziale Plastik e.V. It is a non-profit organisation and can issue donation receipts. However, LusOFest only benefits from earmarked donations that you label accordingly. We will definitely be looking for volunteers to help us select short films again in the summer at the latest!
