Most of the films come from the Portuguese-speaking Global South and are a selection handpicked for the Sommerwerft from the LusOFest 2025 shortlist.
The short films will be shown outdoors at the Wesler Werft. The programme will take place even in bad weather. Admission is free, and the festival is financed by donations on site.

Discovering a new country with different places, people and a different culture can be exciting, but also frightening. Pedro Loyola’s poetic documentary ‘Roots’ captures the nuances of Brazilian immigration to Portugal and shows the joys, challenges and successes of this transition. In the film ‘Brazil is my Abyss’ by Morgana de Mello, a close mother-daughter relationship is put to the test by the rise of the extreme right in Brazil. As the distance between the two grows, the mother decides to try to bring them back together. ‧ ‘Trans.For.Mar – A Wave Of Affection’ is a short documentary that follows 10 trans women in difficult life situations who find surfing to be a powerful tool for change by conquering a space normally reserved for elites. ‧ Amidst conservative politics in the Brazilian city of Goiânia, ‘Blessed be te Joint’ shows how an anti-prohibition group is campaigning for the legalisation of marijuana and fighting against government repression. ‧ ‘Mona Wazediwa’ portrays Humberto Paulo, a courageous young man who has survived several wars, including the armed conflict in Angola, and polio. After his youth, he emigrated and continued his studies and basketball career for people with disabilities. ‧ A day in the life of three homeless men in the countryside. ‘Vegetality’ is a poetic dystopia about the balance between humans, nature and the creator. ‧ ‘Taste of Tradition’ offers a comprehensive insight into a quilombo community where every ingredient tells a story and every dish is a testament to past generations. A film that documents the theme of ‘growing together’ on many levels.
All films will be shown in their original Portuguese with English subtitles (except for Brazil is my Abyss, which will have German subtitles). We’ll show the programme without a break. Feel free to come and go as you please during this open format event. Come check it out!
